Born in a village of Dakshina Kannada District, Sri. N.B. Bhat completed his initial schooling at a local High School in Vitla, Buntwala Taluk. He pursued his graduation at MGM College, Udupi and later in Madras (now known as Chennai). After receiving his B.A (Hon) and M.A (Economics) degree from Vivekananda College, Madras University, Sri Bhat joined Vijaya College as a lecturer in Sociology in 1960. While working as a lecturer, he pursued the Bachelor of Law degree between 1960 and 1962 from Government Law College, Bangalore. He went on to take up the highly competitive Civil Services examination and was directly recruited to the Indian Police Service (IPS) in July 1962. Besides serving as a IPS officer, he completed his LL.M from Karnataka University. After two decades of service in the IPS, he took voluntary retirement in 1982 and immediately entered the Legal profession and has since been practising as an advocate before the High Court and Administrative Tribunals. Sri. N.B. Bhat became a member of the BHS Higher Education Society in the 1980s. He served as the Vice-President of the society and now apart from his duties as Secretary BHSHES, he is also the Dean of Bangalore Institute of Legal Studies which was established in 1993.
